Residents of the small Italian town of Prato Nevoso, in Piedmont, blocked roads using their cars, a lorry and a crane when African migrants, who had transited through Lampedusa, started arriving in their town without warning. Taking advantage of the ski off-season, the regional government had booked hotel accommodation there for the Africans, but had failed to inform local residents of its intentions. The local inhabitants complained that the presence of the Africans would damage the tourist trade and create insecurity as there was no police station in the town, only a watchpost.

After a few hours, the blockade was lifted when the residents were assured that the Africans would be there for one or two weeks only and that a force of carabinieri would be deployed there.
